5 mL blood in plain or lithium heparin tube. A fasting specimen is required.
Method:
Spectrophotometry.

Application:
Rarely required; suspected vitamin C deficiency, scurvy.
Interpretation:
A low value indicates deficiency. Clinical response to treatment is the preferred method to define deficiency.
