PURKINJE CELL ANTIBODIES - serum

Specimen: 5 mL blood in plain tube.

Method: IF, immunoassay.

Reference Interval: Qualitative test.

Application: Purkinje cell antibodies (YO and HU) have only a limited application in the investigation of suspected paraneoplastic syndromes affecting the central nervous system.

Interpretation: YO antibodies may be found in paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration; HU antibodies, may be found in paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis and in sensory neuropathy. A negative test result does not exclude the possibility of a paraneoplastic syndrome.
