PRECIPITINS - serum

Specimen: 10 mL blood in plain tube.

Method: Gel diffusion; precipitins detected include avian, fungal, thermophilic actinomycetes.

Reference Interval: Not detected.

Application: Investigation of hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

Interpretation: Precipitating antibodies indicate exposure, and may be found in asymptomatic individuals. In association with appropriate symptoms, the presence of antibodies supports the diagnosis of hypersensitivity pneumonitis due to the specific agent. See also ASPERGILLUS PRECIPITINS .
