PARIETAL CELL ANTIBODIES - serum

Specimen: 10 mL blood in plain tube.

Method: Indirect IF.

Reference Interval: Not detected.

Application: A supportive, but not diagnostic, test for pernicious anaemia.

Interpretation: Antibodies react with sub-units of the gastric parietal cell proton pump. Positive in 80% of patients with pernicious anaemia and in 40-50% of patients with other organ specific autoimmune diseases. See INTRINSIC FACTOR ANTIBODIES .
