PARATHYROID ANTIBODIES - serum

Specimen: 5 ml blood in plain tube.

Method: Immunossay.

Reference Interval: Not detected.

Application: Assessment of patients with hypocalcaemia or suspected hypoparathyroidism.

Interpretation: The presence of parathyroid antibodies favours the possibility of idiopathic hypoparathyroidism, as a proportion of these cases have an autoimmune basis. The absence of parathyroid antibodies does not exclude the diagnosis of idiopathic hypoparathyroidism.
