LAMELLAR BODIES - amniotic fluid

Specimen: 1 mL amniotic fluid.

Method: Count on a blood cell counter,using the platelet channel.

Reference Interval: Consult laboratory.

Application: Diagnosis of a fetus at high risk of respiratory distress syndrome.

Interpretation: A normal lamellar body count indicates an extremely low risk of respiratory distress syndrome. A decreased count indicates an increased risk.
