GLUTAMIC ACID DECARBOXYLASE (GAD) ANTIBODIES - serum

Specimen: 5 mL blood in plain tube.

Method: Immunoassay.

Reference Interval: Not detected.

Application: The test is under evaluation for the identification of diabetic patients with a high risk of developing insulin dependence. See also ISLET CELL ANTIBODIES .

Interpretation: GAD antibodies are present in >70% of diabetic patients treated with insulin but only 10% of those maintained on oral hypoglycaemic agents.
