FRUCTOSAMINE - serum
Specimen: 2 mL blood in plain
tube.
Method: Spectrophotometry.
Reference Interval: Method dependent.
Typically 200-290 mmol/L.
Application: Monitoring diabetes mellitus; assessment of overall control of blood
glucose over the 1-3 weeks prior to collecting the specimen.
Interpretation: Increased values suggest significant persistent hyperglycaemia.
Levels are lower in the presence of hypoalbuminaemia. The clinical utility of this
test is still controversial and assay of glycated haemoglobin is often preferred,
as it reflects diabetic control over a longer period; see
GLYCATED HAEMOGLOBIN
.
