ANGIOTENSIN CONVERTING ENZYME (ACE) - serum

Specimen: 5 mL blood in plain tube.

Method: Spectrophotometry.

Reference Interval:

Method dependent, typically 12-40 U/L.

Application: Limited role in the investigation and monitoring of sarcoidosis.

Interpretation: Increased levels are found in at least 80% of patients with lung or multisystem sarcoidosis, but the test is less sensitive when only one system, other than lung, is involved. Increased levels are also found in patients with other granulomatous diseases eg tuberculosis, leprosy, asbestosis and silicosis, and occasionally in those with diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism. Low levels are found in patients taking ACE inhibitors or corticosteroids.
