AMYLASE - urine
Specimen: Timed or 24 hour urine
collection with no preservative.
Method: Spectrophotometry.
Reference Interval: Method dependent; consult pathologist.
Application: Rarely indicated: suspected acute pancreatitis with normal serum
amylase; persistent significant elevation of serum amylase, if macroamylasaemia is
suspected.
Interpretation: Urine level may be increased in acute pancreatitis at a time
when the serum amylase level has returned to within the reference interval. High
serum and low urine amylase levels are seen in macroamylasaemia. Use of an amylase/creatinine
clearance ratio is not recommended.
