ALLERGEN SPECIFIC IMMUNOGLOBULIN E - serum

Specimen: 5 mL blood in plain tube.

Method: Solid phase immunoassay.

Reference Interval: Qualitative test.

Application: Detection of specific IgE antibodies, as an adjunct to allergy investigation, where skin prick allergen testing is contraindicated or unsuccessful or when further interpretation is required. Of only limited use in identifying those patients with insect sting sensitivity who are likely to benefit from desensitisation therapy.

Interpretation: A positive result to multiple aeroallergens indicates atopy. In association with a suggestive clinical history, a positive result to a specific allergen supports a causative role for that allergen.
