ADRENAL ANTIBODIES - serum

Specimen: 5 mL blood in plain tube.

Method: Indirect IF with human or other primate adrenal substrate.

Reference Interval: Qualitative test. Positive result is significant.

Application: To establish the diagnosis of autoimmune Addison's disease.To predict risk of adrenal failure in patients with polyglandular autoimmune syndrome type I.

Interpretation: Adrenal antibodies are present in 70% of patients with autoimmune Addison's disease and in <5% of those with Addison’s disease due to other causes. They are also found in 5% of patients with the thyrogastric cluster of autoimmune diseases.
